Each Star a Multitude

You might recall a big project I worked on last summer.

It started with this image I’d made using gold ink on a cyanotype. It reminded me of a nebula.

Normally I stop around this size. As the image gets larger the investment and commitment get bigger.

I’d chicken out because who am I to be making art?

But something made me keep going. They wanted to be bigger. So I pushed through the doubt and discomfort.

it was 103* the day I made this picture outside in the sun.

I wanted to find out what was on the other side of that discomfort, out there where I didn’t know what could happen.

There were big hurdles.

How to flatten paper this big?
How will I frame/store/ship/package it?

What if I mess up all this work?
What am I going to do with something this big?
Am I wasting my time?

But I kept going.

Facing that fear and uncertainty became the theme of the project.

I titled the body of work “Out Here, In the Unknown.”

It was about space, but secretly it was about taking that step beyond what’s familiar and comfortable.

So I kept going.

I kept telling myself I’d just figure out things as I went.

And one tiny awkward step at a time I got there. Into the unknown.

Here is the finished piece. It’s called Each Star a Multitude.

And today I get to tell you that this very same piece, Each Star a Multitude, has been selected by the Cleveland Museum of Art for an exhibition “highlighting the region’s legacy as a hub for artistic excellence.”

Lake Effect: Artists from Cleveland Now will be on display at the Transformer Station from July 9th through November 22nd.

I can’t begin to tell you how honored I am to be included in this group of truly exceptional artists.
