8” Leather Tray

A large leather tray 8" in diameter. Made from two pieces of leather wet molded and adhered together. Hand dyed.

About the cyanotype process:

Cyanotypes have been around since 1842. To make a cyanotype light sensitive iron salts are brushed onto a substrate which is then exposed to sunlight. The UV radiation in sunlight causes a reaction that makes the iron solution turn blue and become insoluble in water. The substrate is then washed. Any areas that were blocked from sunlight will wash out, in essence capturing the shadow of the object that blocked the light.

About wet molding:

Vegetable tanned leather is unique in its ability to retain the shape it dried in after being soaked in water. In this case the leather was soaked and then pressed and dried around a wooden form to give it this shape. Adding heat to this process increases the stiffness of the leather by causing the protein in the leather to restructure itself.
